Building equity and inclusion takes intention, dedication, and a fierce and long-lasting commitment to change. And, it's absolutely worth every ounce of effort.

So, here are 5 tips to help you forge a path towards a more inclusive and equitable workplace:

Educate Yourself and Others

Start by deepening your understanding of equity and inclusion. Read books, attend workshops, and engage in conversations that challenge your own lived and learned perspectives. Remember, the source/author is critically important here. Seek out perspectives that are different from your own, and especially those from folks with identities that have been systematically disenfranchised, oppressed, and/or marginalized. Then, share your newfound knowledge with your colleagues. There's no wrong time to discuss your learnings, just as you'd discuss a popular TV show or movie. Ignorance is the enemy, and knowledge is power. Let's empower each other.

Challenge Biases and Stereotypes:

We all have biases, whether we want to admit it or not. But confronting them head-on is a crucial step in fostering a more inclusive environment. Call out biased behavior, challenge stereotypes, and actively create space for diverse voices to be heard. It's time to dismantle those barriers one stereotype at a time.

Foster an Inclusive Culture

Inclusion starts from the top, but we are all stewards of culture! Bring intention to the way you co-create and participate in culture at work. Create a culture where everyone feels valued and respected. Encourage diversity in your hiring practices, promote diverse leadership, and prioritize mental health and well-being. This looks like advocating for inclusive policy and coverage even when it doesn't benefit you directly. Can you advocate for your company to participate in more recruitment fairs aimed at recruiting underrepresented folks? Can you attend one yourself on behalf of your team?

Amplify Underrepresented Voices

It's time to amplify those voices that have been overlooked for far too long. Create opportunities for underrepresented employees to share their ideas, perspectives, and experiences. This means taking a look at your meeting invitee lists. Who is missing? Invite folks in, ask for their perspectives, and give them credit for their ideas (especially when senior leadership is involved.)

Continuously Assess and Improve

Equity and inclusion are continuous efforts; we must hold ourselves accountable. Regularly assess your organization progress, listen to your teammates and Employee Resource Groups, and take action to improve. Embrace discomfort, embrace change, and never settle. No matter your role, you can be a part of the process of moving your company culture to become more inclusive and equitable.
